New Intercity Train Service to Connect Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odesa in Historic Railway Expansion

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has announced the launch of a new daily Intercity train service that will create an unprecedented direct connection between several of Ukraine’s major cities. Starting June 27, the new Intercity № 765/766 route will operate between Kyiv and Odesa, with the significant addition of stops in Dnipro. This marks the first time in Ukrainian railway history that a direct Intercity service will link the industrial hub of Dnipro with the Black Sea port city of Odesa, representing a major milestone in the country’s transportation infrastructure development.

The introduction of this new route addresses a long-standing gap in Ukraine’s passenger rail network. Previously, travelers wishing to journey between Dnipro and Odesa faced limited options, often requiring connections through Kyiv or enduring lengthy journeys on slower regional trains. The new Intercity service promises to significantly reduce travel times while offering the enhanced comfort and reliability that the Intercity brand has become known for among Ukrainian passengers. This development is particularly noteworthy given the ongoing challenges facing the country’s transportation sector.

Ukrzaliznytsia’s Intercity trains represent the premium tier of Ukrainian passenger rail services, featuring air-conditioned carriages, comfortable seating, onboard catering services, and Wi-Fi connectivity. These trains have become increasingly popular among business travelers and tourists alike since their introduction, offering a competitive alternative to domestic flights and long-distance bus services. The rolling stock typically consists of modern electric multiple units capable of speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour, though actual speeds depend on track conditions and infrastructure along specific routes.

The strategic importance of connecting Dnipro and Odesa cannot be overstated. Dnipro, with a metropolitan population exceeding one million, serves as the economic heart of eastern-central Ukraine, hosting major industrial enterprises, aerospace facilities, and a growing technology sector. Odesa, meanwhile, remains Ukraine’s largest port city and a crucial gateway for international trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. The direct rail link between these two economic powerhouses is expected to facilitate business connections, boost regional tourism, and strengthen economic ties between eastern and southern Ukraine.

This railway expansion comes at a time when Ukraine continues to invest in its transportation infrastructure despite the enormous challenges posed by the ongoing conflict. Ukrzaliznytsia has demonstrated remarkable resilience, maintaining and even expanding services while adapting to wartime conditions. The railway company has played a vital role in evacuating civilians, transporting humanitarian aid, and keeping the country’s economy functioning. The launch of new passenger services signals both operational capability and a commitment to future development.

The historical significance of Ukrainian railways dates back to the mid-19th century, when the first lines were constructed under the Russian Empire. Over the decades, the network expanded to become one of the largest in Europe, spanning over 20,000 kilometers of track. Following independence in 1991, Ukraine inherited this vast system and has worked to modernize it, introducing new rolling stock and improving services. The Intercity program, launched in the 2010s, represented a major step toward European standards of passenger rail service.

Passengers interested in the new service can purchase tickets through Ukrzaliznytsia’s official website, mobile application, or at railway station ticket offices. The company encourages early booking, particularly during peak travel periods, as Intercity services tend to experience high demand. Detailed schedules, including departure times and intermediate stops, will be available through official channels as the launch date approaches. This new connection promises to reshape travel patterns across Ukraine, offering citizens and visitors alike a faster, more comfortable way to traverse the country’s diverse regions.
